Hidden intricacies, compression artifacts, freudian slips, and intentional secret codes lie in the fabric of all man-made signs, despite our eternal struggle to grasp perfection. In our era of high-definition, high-fidelity, high-bandwidth, I seek to exploit the inherent flaws found in the so-called perfect mathematics of digital media, and to push areas of human understanding into realms of illegibility and mystery. Exploring legibility and the many layers of interpretation are at the heart of my work.
Like maps and diagrams, signs and symbols attempt to define areas of mystery and wonder; places, spaces, concepts, and objects that do not fit as they are into the mechanism of our minds. These artifacts are wonderful points of departure for navigating human-ness, nature-ness, technology, and other immaterial places of abstraction by traveling down the long and winding signifier-chain highway.
